South East Asian Night 2014

February 21, 2014

Join us for a night of music and dance of Southeast Asia. Presented by NUS Southeast Asian Studies and Gamelan Asmaradana, this performance will feature the meditative sounds of Central Javanese gamelan, the dynamic explosions of Gong Kebyar of Bali and the flirtatious ‘twerking’ of West Java.

The two ‘lions’, Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble and Gamelan SingaMurti will be sharing the stage for the first time! They will be joined by guest performers from Indonesia, dance students from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), as well as the faculty members who will be performing Filipino and Malay folk songs.

Time: Friday 14 March, 8pm
Venue: NUS Theatrette (LT13)

Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble

February 1, 2013

Singa Nglaras means “relaxing lion” (the word “nglaras” means both to “relax” and “to harmonize, tune”). Formed in January 2004, the ensemble is managed by Dr Jan Mrázek of the NUS Department of Southeast Asian Studies. The ensemble is made up of NUS students, alumni, and faculty, together with many non-NUS members of the public.

Our weekly rehearsals on Tuesday and Wednesday nights are open to anyone keen to learn and enjoy this seriously relaxing music. Please see this post for an FAQ and more details.

If you are using a laptop/desktop, please follow the links on the right for more information. On a mobile device, select “Profile and History” from the drop down menu, and scroll to the bottom to see it.

Of course, you could just send as a message using the contact form 😉
