Upcoming Shows in October!

Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be involved in three exciting productions in collaboration with artistes from Indonesia:

Lintas Nusantara 
September 30, Friday and October 1, Saturday (8.30 pm on both days)
Malay Heritage Centre
Free, but requires registration at: http://malayheritagecentre.peatix.com/

This performance features dances from different parts of Indonesia, Tari Saman from Aceh, Gending Sri Vijaya from Sumatra, and Arjuna Wiwaha, performed by dancers and musicians from ISI Jogjakarta, in collaboration with Singa Nglaras.

Free admission

WayangHip Hop from Yogyakarta and Singa Nglaras Gamelan Ensemble from NUS will collaborate in a joint performance. The event will also feature talks by NUS professors to launch the Contemporary Wayang Archive – CWA (cwa-web.org). Participants include Jan Mrázek, Sarah Weiss, Farah Wardani, Marianna Lis, Miguel Escobar Varela and Catur Benyek Kuncoro.

Barong: The Tale of Kunti Sraya

If you’re free on the very auspicious 13 November (Friday), do come and support Barong: The Tale of Kunti Sraya, a production featuring the students from the Department of South East Asian Studies who have taken a module in Balinese Performing Arts and have spent time learning Balinese dances in Bali. Also featuring guest performers from Bali!

Singa Nglaras on the Waterfront 2015

We’re back at the Esplanade Outdoor Theatre on the 5th of September! As always, we’re honoured to be collaborating with friends from Gamelan Asmaradana and BronzAge Gamelan, in the spirit of building a community where everyone can appreciate and explore Javanese gamelan together.

Date: Saturday, 5 September

Time: 3 half hour sets, at 8pm, 9pm and 10pm.

Venue and Admission: Esplanade Outdoor Theatre, free and open to the public.

“Puspawarna” with Gamelan Sekar Sersan

If you’re free this Saturday evening (15 August), why not stop to smell the Myriad of Flowers at the Esplanade Concourse (click link for official webpage). There are two slots – 8.15 – 8.45pm and 9.15-9.45pm, and will feature a gadhon ensemble that focuses on the “softer” elaborating instruments and vocals.

If you’ve been following Singa Nglaras, you might see some familiar faces performing – here’s a little preview 😉

World Cultures Festival at library@esplanade

We’re honoured to be invited to library@esplanade’s World Cultures Festival: Southeast Asian Edition! A really exciting lineup of dance, music and masks from around the region:

We’re involved in two items:

JAVANESE GAMELAN PERFORMANCE
Date: 29 August, Saturday
Time: 1.30pm – 2.30pm
Venue: Open Stage, library@esplanade

JAVANESE GAMELAN WORKSHOP
Date: 29 August, Saturday
Time: 3.30pm – 5.30pm
Venue: Dance Village, library@esplanade

The performance is free and open to public and “walk-ins”, though they request you register if you’d like seating. The workshop has limited places, but is open to be observed. You can perform all registration at this peatix link.

Getting Ready for the Javanese Fiesta!

The Javanese Association of Singapore is hosting a “Javanese Fiesta”, with talks and workshops spread out over the weekend before National Day. There’s also dinner on 1 August, held at the very tasty Mamanda restaurant, just in front of the Malay Heritage Centre.

Southeast Asian Night 2015

Join the Southeast Asian Studies Department at NUS in celebrating the rich diversity of Southeast Asian performing arts at this years Southeast Asian Night! Thai Shadow Puppetry, student performances from various cultural groups, and gamelan, of course 🙂

This year the ensemble will be presenting a variety of instrumental works, performed by both our regular members and participants from our 6 week beginner’s course.
